Steps Of Breast Self- Examination

  • Discover how to perform a home breast self-examination, finding lumps and breast cancer can be found by regularly doing your own breast examinations.

Step 1;

Begin by looking at your breast in the mirror with shoulder straight and arms on hips.

What to look for ;

  • Any change from the usual size, shape, and colour.
  • Any visible swelling of the breast .

If any of the following changes are seen, report them to your Doctor attention;

  • Bulging, puckering, dimpling of the breast
  • If there is change in position of the nipple or an inverted nipple
  • Redness, soreness, rash and swelling.

Step 2:

Same changes to be looked for with arms raised.

Step 3:

Make sure you looked for any sign of fluid coming out one or both nipples; Eg yellow fluid, milking, watery or blood.

Step 4:

Feel breast while lying down, using the right hand to feel the left breast and the left hand to feel the right breast. used a firm, smooth touch with the finger pads of your hand, keeping the fingers flat and together. Use a circular motion, about the size of the a quarter. Cover the entire breast from top to bottom, side to side from your collarbone to the top of the abdomen and from your armpit to your cleavage.

  • Follow a pattern to be sure that the whole breast is coverd.
  • make sure you begin at the nipple, moving in larger and larger circle until the outer edge of the breast is reached.
  • Ensure that all the tissue from the front to the back of the beast is examined, for the skin and tissue just beneath, use light pressure; use medium pressure for tissues in the middle of your breast; use firm pressure for the deep tissue in the back.
  • When the deep tissue is reached, the individual should be able to feel down to the ribcage.

Step 5:

Lastly, the BREAST should be examined while standing or sitting, many women find that easiest way to feel their breasts is when their skin is wet and slippery, so this can be done while taking bath, using same hand movement described in step 4
